Can you have a dog in an apartment?

Guest blogger Charlotte Frost has written the following posts. Charlotte is the owner of Pug Cody, and she spends a lot of time with her dog. Among other things, she has stacked a facebook forum on her legs, where pug owners meet in Kolding with their dogs.

CAN YOU HAVE A DOG IN AN APARTMENT?

In my eyes, that question can be answered very simply with a YES! However, it’s one of those hunters where a BUT comes right after …My name is Charlotte, and I live with my lovely pug in an apartment, and I definitely think you can easily have a dog in an apartment. But there are a few things you should probably take into consideration before you “just” get a dog. Here are a few of the things I think are important to consider before starting the “apartment dog” project:
  • Can you have a dog in the apartment?
  • How much space does the breed require?
  • Walking, no “easy” resorts on bad days.
  • Is it noisy? = sure neighbor!

The size of the dog that you want to acquire is an important thing to consider. But the big question probably sounds more

“How much space does the breed you want require?”

Just because it is a large dog does not mean that it requires a lot of space. But that is certainly part of the consideration.

My pug is a perfect “apartment” dog as it does not require much space. He just wants to be close to me – and then it does not matter if you have 65 sqm or 200 sqm.

It is also important to find out if you are allowed to have a dog in the apartment where you live. It is not a good starting point to have a dog if you have to keep it hidden from the landlord. – It’s not a burden I would like to carry around …
Another thing that we also had to adjust to before we acquired our dog was that we have no garden. So when we had to train cleanliness training with Cody, it was all the way down to the lawn, out by the parking lot where everyone else also walks by – even when we were in nightwear 🙂 – There is no backyard where you can just open the door .. .. Whether you have a garden or not, it is of course important that your dog is stimulated and gets his daily walks, but when you live in an apartment, it is a must that it gets its daily walks – also on the days when you is ill… I go for three walks a day with Cody, one in the morning, again after work and in the evening – that’s enough for him. We do not have a dog that comes to say when he wants out, it is used to coming out when we say to.

But even though I think it’s great with the three walks we have together every single day, I’m looking forward to the day we can give him a garden – although I hope we’ll still stick to our good habit of go our three daily trips 🙂

Last – but perhaps most important thing I want to end with is: Can it be alone at home? When you live in an apartment, there are underboers or overboers – who may not like dogs, and are not understanding towards a dog that barks or whines.

Cody has learned from the beginning to be alone at home. So that part has never been a problem for us. The pug is rather not the most barking breed – even if he e.g. well can find on the bark of home-ice cream man :).

In addition, many in our neighborhood have dogs, so they understand that dogs also “say something”. Will your neighbors be understanding? It is not always easy to know, but it is worth taking into consideration.

In my opinion, there is nothing better than having a dog. In an apartment or not, as long as you give your dog the best setting and lots of love, then it can easily be done ..
