Is my dog freezing?

Maybe you shake your head when you see other dog owners giving their dogs clothes on? Often clothes are also unnecessary, and are used because it looks cute. But in fact, not all dogs can keep warm during the cold winter months.
At first glance, it does not look like our furry friends can freeze, they are born with the clothes on. But it can actually get too cold for them. It depends on several factors that I want to share with you and that one can be aware of if in doubt.

Fur is a crucial factor

Dogs have different types of fur. Some have a lot, others have only a little, and there are also some completely without.

By looking at the type of fur, one can quickly form a sense of whether the dog is cold-cut. It is also important to be aware of undercoat, because dogs without undercoat often freeze faster than dogs with.

WHAT SIZE IS THE DOG?

The very small breeds often have a harder time keeping warm than the large ones. In fact, the smallest, such as Chihuahuas have extremely severe problems with the cold. This is partly due to the fact that they have a large surface compared to body weight and it is therefore necessary for them to produce more energy to keep warm.

HOW COLD IS IT?

Of course, the temperature has something to say, and if you freeze with a jacket on, then your dog probably does too. Dogs find it just as uncomfortable to freeze as we humans think it is.

HOW DOES MY DOG SHOW SIGN IT IS FREEZING?

A hot dog moves freely and happily, where a cold dog will move differently than it usually does and more petite.
If a dog is shaking and trembling, has its tail between its legs and cold ears, it can also be a clear sign that your dog is freezing.

WHAT CAN I DO IF MY DOG IS FREEZING

  • Avoid longer trips, especially when it is both wet and cold.

If there is even snow and frost, it is important to protect the paws and rinse them of salt, immediately after the walk. When returning home, it is also a good idea to check for rips, as salt and ice are extremely hard on the paws.

  • Keep a watchful eye on your dog, and it shows signs of malaise, then turn the snout home.
  • Avoid keeping your dog still
